Why Was Google Wave Closed?

Google Wave went dead officially last month with the announcement by Google on their official page that it would no longer pursue development on the Wave but would keep the site on probably till the end of the year.
Do you feel a touch of sadness at this decision or not really? Well, for me, I do remember the initial buzz about this product that was generated. With access dished out only through invites, Google had managed to create a curiosity about the product. I had myself received their invite about a couple of weeks after the launch. And I had loved exploring it as with every new technology. But soon the interest dwindled and I can safely say, I hardly used Wave 3 to 4 times in all!
So why did Google Wave fail? What went wrong with Google Wave? Why was Google Wave closed? As Google reports on their site, the reason for this decision was the cold response to it. There are a few reasons that this could be attributed to.
  1. Brainy idea with no practical use: Google Wave was a collaborative technology with the target audience being professionals and businesses that need to collaborate and work together on a project which was made possible with their real time document editing. Sadly, although this might be a technological marvel, it is of no apparent use to majority of people, including professionals.
  2. Target Audience: Today's world is more about catching the youngster's imagination with addictive innovations like social networking, gaming, etc. A thing like Google Wave had no takers in this segment of users - which in fact is the most significant segment of net population that guides and shows the path for new tech advancements. It had nothing in it for them and was just a boring, academic proposition rather than a cool trendy product.
  3. Not well advertised: A great product needs a great marketing strategy to give it the exposure it requires. Sadly in this case, neither was the product what we could call "great" and neither had they a great marketing to support it. One almost forgot he had a Google Wave account!
  4. Confusion about What is Google Wave: Google Wave was one of those things you feel inquisitive about and probably want to have a go at, but are left wondering what it is actually meant to do? How can it be useful to me? What should I do with it?
